How Much do I qualify for through the post 9-11 GI Bill
For Eligible Long Beach Veterans:

  • Full tuition & fees directly to the school for all public school, in-state students
  • $19,198.31 per academic year for those attending private or foreign schools
  • Monthly housing allowance (MHA) based on the Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents at the location of the school (must attend greater than ½ time)
  • Annual books & supplies stipend of $1,000 paid proportionately based on enrollment1

Active Duty

  • The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) is available for those who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces. Active Duty members enroll and pay $100 per month for 12 months; and are then entitled to receive up to 36 months of education benefits once they have completed a minimum service obligation.
  • Long Beach Reservists who are actively drilling and have a 6-year obligation in the Selected Reserve are eligible for up to 36 months of education benefits.2
  • Military Tuition Assistance (TA)  is available to active duty military in all branches including those currently serving in the US Coast Guard. $250 per credit hour is available with an annual ceiling cap of $4,500 at any accredited college. VRAP: Unemployed Long Beach veteran 35-60

  • If you are unemployed and not eligible for other VA education programs, you may qualify for VRAP
  • Receive up to 12 months of training assistance equal to the monthly full-time payment rate under the Montgomery GI Bill–Active Duty program (currently $1,564 per month)
  • Must not be enrolled in any federal or state job training program
  • Must enroll in a VA approved program of education offered by a community college or technical school (Charter College Long Beach offers seven qualifying programs that can be completed in less than a year) 
  • Program must lead to an associate degree, non-college degree, or a certificate, and train the veteran for a high demand occupation
  • 54,000 unemployed veterans are eligible to enroll from October 1, 2012 through March 31, 2014.

VRAP Extension a Possibility

The Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP) provides training towards an associate degree or certificate that leads to a high demand occupation. The following occupations are on the Department of Labor list for high demand occupation and training that can be completed in less than a year (the length of time paid for through VRAP) is available at Charter College Long Beach.1

REAP: Long Beach Reservist

  • REAP offers Long Beach reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001 education benefits or increased benefits. Visit the VA site for payment rates based on your service.3

VEAP: Enlisted during period 1977-1985

  • To qualify for VEAP and receive matching educational funds from the government, you must have opened a contribution account before April 1, 1987 and completed your first period of service.4

DEA: Survivors and Dependents of Veteran
Survivors & Dependents Assistance

  • To be eligible, you must be a son, daughter, or spouse of a veteran who died, is permanently disabled as the result of their service, is missing in action, or was captured by a hostile force.
  • Program offers up to 45 months of education benefits for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training.5

MyCAA: Military Spouse Career Advancement Account

  • MyCAA allows for up to $4,000 of financial assistance to eligible military spouses who are pursuing a license, certification, or associate degree in a portable career field and occupation.
  • In order to qualify for MyCAA, you must be a current spouse of an active duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, National Guard, or Reserve member in pay grades E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-2 who can start and complete their coursework while their military sponsor is on Title 10 military orders.6
